Incandescence: the quality
or state of being glowing or luminous; marked by brilliance especially
of expression; characterized by glowing zeal. That’s how Webster’s
defines incandescence. ALVA Gallery simply uses two words: Gigi Liverant,
and is pleased to announce a new exhibition.
Gigi Horr Liverant has
painted in oils and pastels for more than twenty-five years in an
ongoing exploration of the dramatic effects of both natural and artificial
light. Her early work investigated color-drenched still life subjects,
later evolving into mysterious and mystical images that explored the
phenomena of nocturnal illumination. Recent work has expanded both
palette and subject matter to celebrate the chroma of morning and
afternoon light. Liverant’s subjects are selected for their design
elements and relationship to their environment, while color choices
reveal her emotional response to the subject. In addition to the pastels
for which she is so well known, Gigi Liverant has developed her unique
imagery in large-scale oil paintings. Her work is recognized for its
emphasis on luminous color, spontaneous surface texture and notable
composition.
Liverant attended Paier
College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. She has been the recipient
of numerous awards and honors including First Prize Connecticut Women
Artists, Best in Show Connecticut Pastel Society, and the Diane Bernhardt
Gold Medal Award at the PSA Annual Exhibition in 2000. She is a Pastel
Society of America Master Panelist and a Signature Member of the Connecticut
Pastel Society. Liverant has also been awarded important national
and regional commissions including the Cow Parades in both New York
and West Hartford, the Whale Trail in Southeastern Connecticut and
Rhode Island and murals at multiple locations of the Connecticut Savings
Bank. She is much sought after teacher and lecturer in the Southeastern
Connecticut area.
Liverant’s work is included
in important public and private collections including Lyman Allyn
Art Museum, Connecticut College, Three Rivers Community College, and
New Haven Paint and Clay Club. Gigi Liverant lives and works in Colchester,
Connecticut.
